Too many homeowners spend money on energy upgrades without knowing where the real issues are. We start with diagnostics — blower door tests, duct leakage testing, thermal imaging, airflow analysis — so you know exactly what's wrong before spending a dollar on fixes. When we recommend an improvement, it's because the data says it will work.

About Owner
Nathan Rider is the owner and founder of Peak Energy, Inc. He grew up on a mountain in Boone, NC in a home heated with a wood stove. Cold winters taught him early that comfort comes from how well a home is built: the insulation in the walls, the sealing around every gap, the details most people never think about until they're cold. That understanding has stayed with him.
He holds a degree in Construction Engineering from North Carolina State University and spent over a decade working in construction management before starting Peak Energy. He is the listed qualifier on Peak Energy's North Carolina General Contractor license, #69117. Coming from a world of specs, inspections, and code compliance, Nathan approaches home energy the same way: measure first, then fix. No guesswork, no overselling.
Nathan has performed building diagnostics and crawl space work on homes across Wake County for over 15 years. Earlier in his career he worked as a certified RESNET HERS rater and performed ENERGY STAR new-home ratings, experience that shapes the measurement-first approach he brings to every Peak Energy project.
He and his wife raised three children in Holly Springs, all of whom still live locally. He has attended Hope Community Church for more than 25 years. His Christian faith shapes how he runs Peak Energy: honest assessments, fair pricing, and doing right by people even when it costs something. The work is personal because the community is home.
What We Do
Peak Energy serves two audiences with different needs:
For Homeowners
- Crawl Space Encapsulation — fully sealed and conditioned crawl spaces to control moisture, improve air quality, and reduce heating and cooling costs
- Attic Insulation — blown-in insulation, batt insulation, and air sealing to reduce heat gain and energy loss
- Home Energy Audits — comprehensive diagnostics including blower door testing, duct leakage testing, thermal imaging, and airflow analysis
- Crawl Space Insulation & Vapor Barriers — insulation upgrades, vapor barrier installation, and moisture management for vented crawl spaces
- Crawl Space Dehumidifiers — purpose-built, high-efficiency units sized for sealed crawl spaces with continuous drain options
- Energy Monitoring — whole-home energy monitoring system installation for real-time visibility into electricity consumption
For Builders & HVAC Contractors
- Duct Leakage Testing — NC code compliance testing for newly installed residential duct systems. Thresholds: 4 CFM25/100SF to outside, 5 CFM25/100SF total duct leakage.
- Blower Door Testing — building envelope air tightness verification. NC residential new construction must meet 5 ACH50.
- HVAC Airflow Testing — we test (not balance) supply, return, exhaust, make-up air, and fresh air ventilation using flow hoods and measurement grids.
Licensing & Program Participation
Peak Energy, Inc. holds an active North Carolina general contractor license, number 69117, Building classification, with Nathan Rider as the listed qualifier (Q.25560). You can verify it at the NC Licensing Board for General Contractors.
We are also approved to perform rebate-qualifying work under two separate programs, which means homeowners can often get part of an insulation, air sealing or duct sealing project paid for:
- Duke Energy Smart $aver: approved participating contractor. Duke Energy pays $700 for qualifying attic insulation with air sealing and $350 for stand-alone duct sealing, with no income limits. See our Duke Energy Smart $aver rebates page.
- Energy Saver North Carolina: registered contractor. The state's income-qualified Home Energy Rebates program, administered by NC DEQ, covering up to $16,000 of eligible project costs for qualifying households. See our Energy Saver NC rebates page.
The two stack. A household that qualifies for Energy Saver NC on income and is a Duke Energy customer can claim both on the same project, and because we are approved under both, that is one contractor, one scope of work and both sets of paperwork handled on our end.
Smart $aver pays on measured results, not on good intentions. It requires documenting a 5% or greater reduction in whole-home air leakage and a 12% or greater reduction in duct leakage. We own the blower door and duct leakage equipment that produces those numbers and run it ourselves, which is the same reason Triangle builders hire us for code compliance testing.
